Weekly Blurb In the service of the king

In the service of the king

On Thursday I attended a commissioning service for Margaret and two others as chaplains at the Children's Hospital Westmead; a bit belated perhaps, but better late than never. At the service the Rev. Jan Donohoo, the other Anglican Chaplain, spoke about the role and ministry of the chaplains in the hospital. It was Jan's talk, as well as Margaret's report of comments made last week by Peter Jensen, our Archbishop, when he spoke at an the afternoon tea with the chaplains, that has brought home to me that it is people in the various chaplaincy ministries, such as hospitals, prisons, courts, schools, hostels and nursing homes who have far more contact with the general, non-Christian, public than do people like me in parish ministry.

Our chaplains, many actually paid by Anglicare, are at the cutting edge, the coal face of our church as we bring the love of God to our community, whether it be by acts of Christian compassion or by the proclamation of the Gospel.

Please pray for Margaret and the other chaplains, in their various ministries, as they carry out this vital work. Much of it is unseen, and thus unappreciated, by us, the rest of the church, but it is definitely seen, and appreciated by those who receive their ministry.

"I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Matt. 25:35 -40
