Jesus is the reason for the season

The other day I was driving along, listening to the radio playing a Northern Hemisphere mid-winter sleigh bells tune as part of that radio station’s offering for Christmas. I thought how inappropriate as I baked in the summer heat. Their next offering was Rolf Harris singing “Six White Boomers” - more appropriate to the climate but even further away from the true meaning of Christmas, and it was even worse. I thought how nice it would be if they just stuck to the traditional, Christian, Christmas carols like “Silent Night”, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, “O Come All Ye Faithful” and the like, and kept their celebration centered on the true content of Christmas.
Our culture has added all sorts of accoutrements onto the simple message of Christmas: “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.“
This is the true wonder of Christmas, the reason for all the celebration. Gifts are good, feasting is yummy, good will is wonderful, peace on earth is admirable but God’s gift of eternal life beats all these hands down. As we celebrate Christmas this year let’s make it plain to our families, our friends, our neighbours, our workmates, our city and country that Jesus is the reason for the season.
May God bless you this Christmas and keep you safe throughout the holiday (Holy Day) period.
