Lest We Forget

Recently I attended the funeral of a man who died of cancer. Though he was a man whom I had only occasional contact with in recent times, he was a man who was a significant influence to me in my early Christian life. He was someone I remember as always contending for the Lord Jesus, full of God talk, taking every opportunity to challenge the prevailing culture of our society. They were attitudes he instilled in me during the early days of my Christian life. Later on in life, I was humbled to learn that he prayed for me every day!
At his funeral I realised I was not alone. All who spoke reflected on his solid Christian character and the fact that he took every opportunity to be a witness for the Lord Jesus, and to pray. Partly, it made me think about how people would remember me at my funeral.
But it also reminded me that we tend not to give thanks for those who have poured their lives into leading us in the Gospel. The way God teaches us is through relationships. The Apostle Paul says to Timothy ‘You know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings…‘. That Timothy knows Paul’s life and character is the foundation of Paul’s ministry to Timothy.
When was the last time you encouraged someone that their example of life and godliness was helping you be Christian? It can spur them to keep going in the face of discouragements. May I take this opportunity to encourage you to encourage Christians you know who are serving our Lord so fervently in this kind of way… before its too late.
