Make the Most of Every Opportunity!

Someone was telling me the other day that they were in a conversation that started off about interest rates, and ended up about the death & resurrection of Jesus! It was both amazing and encouraging to hear of this man’s concern for the lost.
And it reminded me of the importance of what is often called ‘God-talk’. Simply, it is putting God into everyday conversations (not as a swear word!). Colossians 4:6 tells us to make our speech always full of grace, seasoned with salt…. 1 Corinthians 9 tells us to make the most of every opportunity. And with Christmas approaching we will have many opportunities. God-talk is an excellent way to start making our conversations ‘‘salty’’.
If you have never given it a go before, it might be as simple as letting people see the importance of the Lord Jesus to you at this Christmas time. So, when you are talking about what you are doing for Christmas, all you need do is mention church as the first and most important thing that you are doing over Christmas. It may even be an opportunity to invite them along. For example: “Our Christmas starts at Christmas Eve. Our church is having a new Kids Christmas Extravaganza at 5pm on Christmas Eve. Hey – would you like to come along?” This is just one example. The list of particular things you can say is endless – even providing a way to move a conversation about interest rates to the Gospel!
Perhaps we don’t use ‘God-talk’ more because we think people don’t want to hear it, or fear being embarrassed. But it is worth remembering that many would testify to the fact that generally people are more willing to have conversations about the Lord Jesus than we think they will be.
Will you make the most of every opportunity that the Lord provides?
