Praise be to the God of Miracles

We live in a world in which it is popular to think of God as the God of the gaps. That is, we are tempted to think that the world ticks along on a day to day basis, and does so all by itself. But the Bible tells us this is not true. God is not just the Creator of the universe, but he is also the sustainer of the universe (cf Hebrews 1:3). Every single thing that happens can only happen because God makes it happen – even the seemingly routine things like the rising of the sun.

That said, every now and then something happens where we cannot help but be overwhelmed by God’s kindness and sovereignty. His sending of the Lord Jesus into the world is the greatest example (John 1:1-18). And I would like to suggest that at 7.30am, Friday 3rd October was another such occasion, all be it on a slightly smaller scale. This was the time that Sarah was born into our world, to Simon and Lauren who are members of our Sunday Night Church.

Simon and Lauren have been a wonderful example of the kind of honesty that should exist in a Christian community such as ours, and I commend their example and leadership to all of us. Part of the reason God has blessed us with a Christian community is so that we can support and encourage one another as we await the return of the Lord Jesus (Hebrews 10:24-25). Let us make sure that we do.

Simon and Lauren have been trying to have children for 5 years. Last year they shared with us that they have had 3 miscarriages, and a little over a year ago they lost a baby at 15 weeks under extremely sad and difficult circumstances. They asked us to pray that ‘if it is God’s will, [they] may one day have children.’ I was close to tears during the week as I met Sarah. I saw first hand that our great God has answered our prayers, on this occasion, in the affirmative.

We should rejoice with Simon and Lauren. But as we do, let us also remember to pray for others you know who are struggling to have children. Maybe God would be kind and positively answer these prayers as well.
