State Politics

As Rector of Toongabbie Anglican Church I have usually avoided speaking officially about politics, either Federal or State, but there is an issue coming up in the March NSW state elections that I believe I should speak about.  You may have read the article on page 3 of February Southern Cross about the Christian Democrat’s concern over the Greens party gaining control of the upper house in the NSW parliament, “Fred goes green for NSW’s future”.  I would like to add my voice of concern to that of Fred Nile.

Ostensibly the Greens party represents concern for the environment, reduction of green house gasses and similar policies. But behind this environmental concern there is a whole swag of policies which reflect their secular humanist and pagan philosophy. I looked up their web site nsw.greens.org.au and examined a number of their policies. The items quoted below are representative of where the Greens stand on social issues:

  • “protection from discrimination and vilification through amending existing state legislation, and eliminating exemptions currently provided in the Anti-Discrimination Act
  • “equal parenting rights through equality of access to adoption and fostering, and artificial insemination and in vitro fertilisation procedures, regardless of sex and sexuality
  • “voluntary euthanasia is a fundamental human right.”

I share Fred Nile’s concern that the Greens would use a majority in the upper house to force the government, whichever major party wins, to adopt their anti-‘Christian policies’ on support for euthanasia, removal of Scripture in schools, forcing Christian schools to employ practicing homosexuals, adoption of children by same sex marriage partners, toughening anti-vilification laws so that Christians cannot speak up on moral issues.

I believe that as Christians we should ask ourselves “On what basis can I not give my primary vote to the Christian Democrats particularly for the upper house and whatever my preference for a major party?”
