Supporting others in prayer

One of the great things about church is that we are a community of people united together by our Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible talks about this community as one body (Romans 12:4-5). This body is called to serve one another in love as commanded by Jesus, (John 13:14-15). Jesus sets an example of serving and supporting each other by washing the disciples feet and we too are called to do the same. And that is exactly what we can do for those who will be starting the intense exams known as the HSC. The HSC starts in mid October and goes until November 13th and there are eight students at TAC who will be studying hard for them.

I’m sure we can all remember what it is like to be under pressure, some of us still are. And so during this time we can help these few among us by supporting them in prayer.

I want to encourage you for the next five weeks to be praying for these students, committing them to our great and powerful God who is living and active amongst his creation.

A few things we can be praying for each student are:

  • That they will be diligent in their studies and not be lured away by the many distractions we have today.
  • Pray that they will be able to recall all that they have learnt and studied during the exams.
  • And most importantly, we can be praying that each student will keep a right and godly perspective in view. Pray that they won’t lose sight of the Lord Jesus and during this time they will continue serving him and growing in relationship with him.

Prayer in the Bible is described as something powerful, “prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective” (James 5:16). Prayer is the way God wants us to talk to him. All throughout the Bible people are commanded to pray (1 Sam 12:19, Jer 29:7, Matt 6:9, Phil 4:6, Col 4:2) and the list goes on. And God promises that when we do, he will answer.

We are in a unique relationship with the creator and sustainer of the world. We can pray to him having confidence that all our prayers are heard and answered. So let’s support our young people by using our most powerful resource, our relationship to our loving and mighty God.
