Teaching an old dog new tricks

About 2 years ago, some fitness fanatic friends encouraged me to join a gym. I knew the statistics that most people who join a gym do not go beyond 3 months, and accordingly I was initially quite reluctant. However, I was reminded that the idea of being fit was both an appealing thought, and also a good idea. And at that time 2 years ago, I had the opportunity to turn a good idea into reality. Even if I failed, at least I would know that I gave it a go. Many of my friends found the whole situation quite amusing.

Fortunately, I was able to put that aside and I joined up. And even though other friends who joined at the time did not continue, I am pleased to say that I did. 2 years down the track, however embarrassing it may be, I am still a regular at a gym. At times it was hard to get there. At times I looked for any and every excuse to avoid going. But today I am a living testimony to the fact that it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks, as I was able to establish new and sustainable routines.

The same process can be at work in the Christian life. Even though at times it can feel so hard to make sustainable changes for the better, it can be done. Furthermore, it is worth remembering that we have the Creator of the universe with us as we seek to change. It is his will that we live to be more like Jesus every day.

What change do you need to implement for the sake of the Gospel? For some it may be an area of sin you are struggling with (Colossians 3:5). For others it will be being more regular as you meet with God’s people at church or Bible study (cf Hebrews 10:25). For others it will be serving his people with your God given gifts. (1 Corinthians 12:27-31). Whatever area it may be, be encouraged. For it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks.

whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31)
