The Biggest Threat

Sunday 11 May, 2008 · Posted by Raj Gupta

What is the biggest threat to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus? It is an interesting question. Several things come to mind. Maybe it is post-modernism (the theory that there is no absolute truth). Maybe it is the immorality that is so prevalent in our world.

I concluded that the biggest threat to the Gospel today is the undermining of the authority of the Bible. Lots of other things are related to that. But the core and underlying issue seems to be that so many have lost an understanding of the fact that the Bible is the ultimate authority.

That is one of the reasons we are doing our current series on ‘Ideas that Changed the World’. As we heard last week, when people realised that the Bible is God’s Word, their lives were changed forever. The tussle that we have been hearing about in the 16th century was in many ways a tussle between the authority of tradition and the authority of the Bible. When people were able to understand the Bible for themselves, they realised the amazing Grace of God in sending Jesus into the world. Many people died to allow others the privilege of hearing this message for themselves.

This authority of the Bible is under attack in different ways today. For few is it (although for some it is) the issue of traditions. Today, the issues seem to be related to the authority of experience and the authority of reason. For different people the particular issue is different, but the underlying problem almost always seems to be the same.

If the evil one were to tempt you to move away from the authority of the Bible, where would he be most likely to succeed? Would be with tradition, experience or reason? Perhaps being aware of where we may be susceptible is one way of protecting ourselves.

God’s Word says All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.(2 Timothy 3:16-17).

May we never wander away.
