Truth and error

Sunday 21 September, 2003 · Posted by Philip Bassett

In my Bible Study Group on Wednesday night and again on Thursday night in the Being Christian Being Anglican group the issue of Christians protecting themselves from false teaching was raised. If youve been following the debate in the Anglican and other churches about the issue of ordination of homosexual ministers and the blessing of same sex marriages, you may have picked up on the fact that at the bottom of these issues is the movement away from biblical truth.

So how do we protect ourselves from false teaching? The answer is, by knowing the scriptures. At various places in the New Testament, the Apostle Paul and others take their readers to task for moving away from the truth of the gospel as originally taught to them by the apostles. Paul says, You foolish Galatians! Who bewitched you? John in Revelation wrote, You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen.

Regular personal Bible reading, bible readings in our Sunday services, clear biblical expository preaching, group Bible study are all important means by which we can ensure that we know God's truth and protect ourselves when someone tries to tell us something different.
