We Can Change the World

No matter which way you look at it, our world is in a mess. Corruption is on the increase at many levels. If there was ever any doubt, the folly of materialism has powerfully been revealed in recent times. Consumerist attitudes prevail at almost every level. The nature of relationships has even become consumerist. Many now think it acceptable to murder unborn babies, even legislators. Statistics indicate depression is approaching epidemic proportions. People are busier than ever, and people are more unhappy than ever. And we could go on. The point is simple: our world is in a mess.
Governments, with all of their resources, seem powerless to arrest the current financial turmoil. And humanity is powerless to correct the trajectory of our world. I was fascinated to see an interview with the former Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke, recently. He said words I will not forget: ‘I am generally an optimist. But as you look at the world today, there is very little to be optimistic about.’
The Bible tells us that this is the reality of the world, despite how it may look. Indeed, when things look prosperous and rosy, there is no cause to think about the hard questions. In fact, there is a good case to be made that God is making so evident the foolishness of the world for a very good reason.
Unlike the Governments of the globe, Christians have the answers to change the world at this time. The answer is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus. For the underlying problem of the world his human sin and rebellion from God, and the answers that only Christians have is the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is only through Jesus that people can receive forgiveness for their sins.
Herein lies the power to change the world. Once forgiveness is experienced, your life must be transformed. The Bible says if your life is not transformed, maybe you should ask if you have genuinely embraced Christ. And part of the transformation is living in peace with God and your neighbour.
My friends, we have the power to change the world. If there has ever been a time that our world needs to hear the secret it is now. For, we have the word of eternal life. How could we ever keep them in?
